verest may well be the highest peak in the world, but the beautiful peak of Nanda Devi East must surely be the most fascinating!” — Tenzing Norgay Sherpa
Rising like a twin fortress of gleaming white granite from the Kumaon Himalayas, Nanda Devi East (also known as Sunanda Devi) transcends mere altitude. This peak of profound character guards the legendary Nanda Devi Sanctuary, steeped in ancient mystique and spiritual reverence. Locally revered as the abode of Goddess Nanda Devi, it holds sacred status across the Garhwal and Kumaon ranges—climbing here means treading hallowed ground.
A testament to alpinism’s golden age, Nanda Devi East was first summited in 1939 by a daring Polish team, cementing its place in mountaineering history. Untouched by mass tourism, it preserves the wild, pristine silence that draws only the boldest explorers. Ready to embrace its timeless challenge?
